Beth Horikawa

Roy was the head of my thesis committee when I was working on my MA at UAF from 1984-1986.  He encouraged my creativity, respected my point of view, gave me real feedback, and challenged me when my thinking was sloppy (which was a lot :-)).  There was no BS with him, no academic elitism.  He was funny, deeply intelligent, compassionate, passionate--and his classes were incredible.  They were about dialogue.  No lectures--"just" people sharing deep ideas. He dared us to keep it real.  Those seminars totally rocked my world.  They were about life, about keeping and nurturing our own hearts and the hearts of others while sharpening our intellects.  I owe Roy much.
