Dr. Bird was a mentor and friend to me. We had several long chats over the last few years as I began planning for my doctoral work in Medieval History. He reviewed my applications and offered helpful suggestions even though I was only an independent student at UAF. Because of his help and recommendations, I was accepted at the University of Bristol in England, where I am currently doing doctoral work. Without Dr. Bird's encouragement and insight, I would not be doing the research I love. He made me believe that all things are possible and that I can achieve my goals. I am sure he helped others in the same way.
I will miss him.
