Steve Goerger

In my time at UAF, Dr. Bird was the department head, and the head of honors. I saw him mostly in non-academic settings, but at the same time I felt as if he were deeply involved in my academic life at UAF. He knew I wrote fiction, he inquired after my teaching assignments, and he always seemed deeply involved in the life of all the English students on campus, both graduate and undergraduate. His life was all about mentoring others, and for that everyone who knew him was lucky. For that I know we all miss him a lot.
